The Two Main Types of Meditation

December 23, 2022

Open monitoring and focused attention meditation are two types of meditation methods that differ in their approach and outcome. Both techniques have been widely practiced for centuries and are known to provide various mental and physical health benefits for individuals. Read on to explore the differences between open monitoring and focused attention meditation and analyse their benefits.

Open Monitoring Meditation

Open monitoring meditation, also known as mindfulness meditation, aims to increase awareness of the present moment without attaching any judgment or interpretation to it. It involves observing one’s thoughts, emotions, and sensations as they arise, allowing them to come and go without interfering.

The primary goal of open monitoring meditation is to develop nonreactive and nonjudgmental awareness of one’s thoughts and feelings, leading to a sense of calmness and acceptance. In open monitoring meditation, the person sits in a relaxed position with their eyes closed, focusing on their breath and observing their thoughts and emotions as they arise.

The benefits of open monitoring meditation include a reduction in anxiety, improved emotional regulation, and increased attention and focus. It also promotes greater self-awareness and empathy by facilitating a nonreactive and nonjudgmental approach to thoughts and emotions, improving mental and emotional stability.

Focused Attention Meditation

Focused attention meditation, also known as concentrative meditation, involves a mental process that focuses one’s attention on a single object or thought. The object of focus can be the breath, body sensation, sound, or an image.

The goal of focused attention meditation is to cultivate a deep sense of concentration and mindfulness. In focused attention meditation, the person sits in a stable and comfortable position with their eyes closed, focusing their attention on the chosen object or thought while excluding any other distractions.

Focused attention meditation enables one to concentrate better, increases mental clarity, and reduces the impact of distractions on the mind.

In conclusion, open monitoring meditation and focused attention meditation are two techniques that aim to cultivate mindfulness and concentration in individuals. Both methods have distinct approaches and different benefits. Therefore, individuals may choose either method based on their specific needs and goals. The choice between the two may depend on individual preferences or personal experiences. Ideally, a blend of open monitoring and focused attention meditation may provide a holistic approach to nurturing your mind and well-being.
